Results of the Biobased in the NMD programme:

more than 80 new biobased environmental declarations and approximately 135 category 3 declarations

Thursday 22 October 2026

Biobased construction materials can only be properly included in environmental performance calculations if reviewed environmental data is available for them. Within the National Approach to Biobased Construction (NABB), Stichting NMD is therefore working on more and better environmental data for biobased construction products. Manufacturers can make use of the Filling the Gaps Compensation Scheme for this. Read here what the programme has delivered so far.

The results

Manufacturers and suppliers submitted 185 applications for biobased compensation. In the meantime, more than 80 biobased category 1 environmental declarations have been added to the database. In addition, approximately 135 category 3 environmental declarations have been published.

The end-of-life scenarios for biobased materials have also been updated following research and consultation. The research into a biobased indicator, which makes the biobased content visible in environmental declarations, has been completed. This indicator will follow later this year.

All biobased environmental declarations can be found in the NMD Viewer. From 1 January 2027, the biobased percentage will also be visible in the viewer.

In practice

How the scheme works out for a manufacturer is explained by John Smits of Sam Panels in an interview about the Filling the Gaps Compensation Scheme. He shows that the compensation helps manufacturers overcome the threshold to registering in the NMD.

End-of-life scenarios

Biobased materials often have different processing routes at the end of their service life, such as biodegradation. The updated scenarios should lead to more accurate calculations. These end-of-life scenarios for biobased materials are expected to become mandatory as of 1 July 2027.

As of 1 January 2027, the new end-of-life scenarios will be available in the input platform.

What does this mean for you?

Are you a manufacturer or supplier of a biobased construction product? Through the Filling the Gaps Compensation Scheme, you can have your product registered in the NMD. If you do not yet have an LCA, you will no longer make the 2026 deadline. You can still express your interest in registering, as the scheme may be continued in 2027.

Are you missing an environmental declaration for a biobased product in the database? Then you can submit a suggestion via the feedback form.
