Explanatory notes on the tariffs
A fixed annual contribution should be paid for inclusion of environmental data in the NMD. Within this basic package, two environmental declarations incl. basic profiles will be included in the NMD. If you want to include one environmental declaration you still need to pay the fixed annual contribution. For environmental declarations outside this basic package a graduated scale applies per environmental declaration.
Clones of product cards
In addition to creating new environmental declarations, it is also possible to clone an environmental declaration. A clone is a copy of an existing environmental declaration in the Dutch Environmental Database (NMD) that serves as the basis for a new, independently managed environmental declaration. No additional tariff costs are charged for a clone.
An environmental declaration is only classified as a clone if all of the conditions below are met:
- A clone can only exist if a valid environmental declaration already exists in the NMD that serves as the basis for the clone
- The clone has the same data owner as the original environmental declaration
- The clone is based on the same LCA as the original environmental declaration
- The environmental performance is identical to that of the original environmental declaration
Differences compared to the original environmental declaration relate solely to information that has no effect on the environmental performance, such as the product name, trade name or other administrative product information, and the product's application (the classification).
As soon as a change affects the underlying LCA, the LCA calculation, the environmental data, or the environmental performance, it is no longer considered a clone. In that case, the environmental declaration is regarded as a separate environmental declaration for tariff purposes. Stichting NMD assesses whether an environmental declaration meets the conditions for a clone. This assessment is decisive for the tariff.
Frequently asked questions Foundation NMD
The Dutch Environmental Database (NMD) contains environmental data of construction products and building installations - stored in environmental declarations, which is used when calculating the environmental performance of construction works in the calculation tools. The environmental data in the NMD includes environmental profiles: lists of environmental impacts expressed in different environmental impact categories according to European Standard (EN) 15804, such as resource depletion, global warming potential and ozone depletion. An environmental profile is the outcome of a life cycle assessment (LCA).
Stichting NMD maintains and safeguards system quality with the Environmental Performance Assessment Method for Construction Works and a neutral, independent environmental database that stores environmental data on construction materials, construction products and building installations. They do this in coordination with and with the commitment of all stakeholders.
The Assessment Method for Environmental Performance of Building Works is the agreed method in the Netherlands for determining the environmental performance of building products, building installations and the associated MPG at construction level. The application of the data from the National Environmental Database is becoming increasingly important in the construction industry. The data in the NMD is used in validated tools for calculating the environmental performance of construction works mentioned in, among others, the Building Decree 2012 and certification schemes for sustainable real estate such as BREEAM-n and GPR and is used in tenders.
Developers and contractors are increasingly directed to determine the environmental performance of a building according to the Assessment Method. This means that they have to make their choices of materials and installations right from the design phase, and the relevance of the scheme is growing and becoming more important. As a result, the need for specific proprietary data is increasing. It helps designers and builders make their design choices.
