Guidance: application of EPDs in environmental declarations
When compiling environmental declarations, EPDs of raw materials and semi-finished products are increasingly used. This data can be valuable, but does not always align one-to-one with the Assessment Method for Environmental Performance of Construction Works.
This guidance helps LCA consultants and recognised LCA experts determine consistently when and how these EPDs can be applied within the Dutch Environmental Database.
The guidance "Application of EPDs in environmental declarations" provides a practical method for assessing whether EPDs of raw materials and semi-finished products are suitable for use in the Dutch Environmental Database. The core principle is that EPDs are tested for comparability with the Assessment Method, with any deviations made transparent. This takes place in three steps: identifying methodological deviations, carrying out an impact analysis, and registering applicable EPDs.
The guidance supports both LCA consultants and recognised LCA experts in applying producer-specific data consistently and reproducibly.
What is this guidance and when do you use it?

You use this guidance when you want to use an EPD as background data and need to determine whether it is sufficiently comparable with the Assessment Method, and therefore suitable for application.
