Energy carriers in the National Environmental Database

Energy carriers, such as electricity, heat and fuels, play an important role in the environmental performance of construction works. That is why they are included in the National Environmental Database (NMD) as a separate product group. For these energy carriers, environmental declarations have been drawn up that provide insight into their environmental impacts over the entire life cycle.

Updated environmental declarations for energy networks (infrastructure) and energy carriers

At the beginning of 2025, the environmental declarations for energy carriers and the materialisation of energy networks (infrastructure) have been updated. New environmental declarations have been added and outdated declarations have been deactivated.

When preparing an environmental performance calculation, the materialisation of energy networks must be included.

Table 1 provides an overview of all active environmental declarations for energy carriers and infrastructure in the National Environmental Database (NMD).

There are three types of declarations, each with its own application:

  • Green-shaded declarations
These declarations may be used in the environmental performance calculation. They have a service life of one year and must be declared based on annual energy consumption. They are available for both NL/SfB and Energy.
  • Purple-shaded declarations
These declarations are intended for situations where electricity is supplied externally, for example via a wind turbine or PV panel located outside the building. This includes connection to the PV system of a neighbouring building. These declarations are also available for both NL/SfB and Energy.
  • Blue-shaded declarations
These declarations may not be used in the environmental performance calculation. They are used to provide additional insight into the environmental impact of building-related energy use, as part of the so-called MEPG calculation (for buildings and utilities) or the MKI calculation (for civil engineering projects). These declarations may only be declared under Energy.
The calculation method can be found in Chapter 4 of the Assessment Method.
Note: this concerns an optional calculation for which implementation is not yet available. Stichting NMD will publish a follow-up article explaining how and when this method can be applied.

The LCA report associated with these environmental declarations can be viewed here.
