Late November 2024, the Dutch Environmental Database organised a training session for LCA practitioners on the scaling of environmental declarations. During the webinar, the use of the scaling tool in the new entry platform of the Dutch Environmental Database was discussed. The training was led by David van Nunen of LBP|Sight.

What is scaling?

Scaling is a method that allows one environmental profile to be applied to multiple product variants using one or two variables. This avoids the need to create a new environmental declaration for every minor product change, such as adjusting the thickness of a construction panel. The scaling tool in the new entry platform simplifies and streamlines this process.

Dutch Environmental Database Scaling Sheet for LCA practitioners

To develop a scaling formula, LCA practitioners can use the Dutch Environmental Database Scaling Sheet (Excel), created by LBP|Sight. During the webinar, a practical example demonstrated how to optimally use this tool.

The scaling tool is designed to create scaling formulas in a clear and user-friendly way, ensuring the highest possible accuracy. The tool uses the least-squares method to minimise relative deviation, improving upon previous methods and resulting in more accurate calculations—even for smaller products.
