What is an environmental declaration?

An environmental declaration is an overview of the environmental impact of a construction product throughout its entire life cycle. This impact is calculated on the basis of a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), a method that looks at the environmental effects in all phases: from raw material extraction and production to use, demolition and recycling.

These declarations are included in the Nationale Milieudatabase (NMD) and form the basis for calculations such as the Environmental Performance of Buildings (MPG).

The NMD distinguishes three categories of environmental declarations:

Category 1: Tested, proprietary data (manufacturer's property).

Category 2: Tested, industry/sector-specific data (industry property).

Category 3: Untested, generic data (fallback option with 30% increase factor).

(Previously, the term “product card” was used, but due to market developments, the term “environmental declaration” has been chosen to better reflect current practice.)
