The Dutch Environmental Database (Stichting NMD) has published 11 new biobased category 3 environmental declarations for application in Building and Utility (B&U). These include mycelium-based insulation materials, structural boards made from various biofibres, and biobased façade panels. The environmental declarations were prepared by Agrodome as part of the National Approach to Biobased Construction (NABB).

Within the same project, attention is also being given to biobased applications in civil engineering works. An additional set of biobased category 3 environmental declarations for this domain will be published shortly. These include various biocomposites, for example for traffic signs and lighting columns, as well as wooden bank protection and mattress systems, and lignin-enriched bio-asphalt.

Suggestions

Within the National Approach to Biobased Construction, there is still scope to develop additional category 3 environmental declarations for biobased materials. If there are additional needs from the market for such materials in the Dutch Environmental Database, suggestions can be submitted (see Feedback on environmental declarations). Biobased programme manager John Drissen is committed to incorporating these suggestions as much as possible and, in this way, addressing the so-called “white spots” in the Dutch Environmental Database.

For manufacturers of biobased materials who wish to prepare a category 1 environmental declaration, a White Spots reimbursement scheme is also available.
