Application environmental performance in B&U and GWW

Environmental performance is a crucial tool for gaining insight into and assessing the environmental impact of materials and processes in construction. Both the Building & Infrastructure (B&U) and Civil Engineering & Public Works (GWW) sectors use standardised environmental performance calculations for this purpose. On this page, you can read how environmental performance is applied in these two sectors and which calculations are used.

The environmental performance calculation is part of the environmental performance system managed by the Dutch Environmental Database Foundation (Stichting NMD). This system consists of a coherent framework, including:

  • Assessment methods, including calculation rules at both building and product levels
  • The Dutch Environmental Database (NMD)
  • Additional (generic) agreements

Application of Environmental Performance in Building & Infrastructure (B&U) and Civil Engineering & Public Works (GWW)

The environmental performance is a crucial tool for gaining insight into and assessing the environmental impact of materials and processes in construction. Both the Civil & Utility construction (B&U) and Civil Engineering & Infrastructure (GWW) sectors use standardised environmental performance calculations for this purpose.

This calculation is part of the environmental performance system managed by Stichting NMD. This system forms a coherent framework consisting of:

  • Assessment methods, including calculation rules at both building and product levels, with a distinction made between new construction and existing buildings;
  • The Dutch Environmental Database (NMD);
  • Additional (generic) agreements.

In Figure 1, the interrelationship between these components and the various application areas is shown schematically. Below the image, you can read more information about each application area.

Environmental Performance in practice

The environmental performance of buildings and infrastructure is applied in different ways, depending on the type of project and the phase you are in. Whether it concerns new construction, existing buildings, or developments in policy and regulations, each application requires a different perspective and, in some cases, a different Assessment Method.

This page is part of an overview that shows how environmental performance is applied in various situations and when to use which approach.
