National Environmental Database mission

Stichting National Environmental Database (NMD) was founded as independent organisation to manage and maintain the Assessment Method and accompanying database for assessing the environmental performance of construction works

  • This uniform assessment method has been designated by the government in building regulations as an instrument to calculate the Environmental Performance of Buildings (Environmental Performance of Buildings). This Assessment Method supports policies on climate, raw materials and waste, and circular construction. The Assessment Method and connected database are also designated within the framework of government policy on sustainable procurement and tendering.

  • The Assessment Method is in line with European visions and is based on the total life cycle of construction products and building installations that are processed and used in buildings and civil engineering projects. The method also considers reuse, renewability and recycling.

  • The Assessment Method is based on the total life cycle of construction products and building installations that are processed and used in buildings and civil engineering projects. The method also considers reuse, renewability and recycling.

  • Data are assessed in an unambiguous, controllable way and can be used directly in the design and implementation process. This creates a level playing field.

  • The Assessment Method is used in the public domain as well as by private organisations to categorise sustainable real estate, e.g. via BREEAM, GPR, etc. The method is explicitly used for assessment at building or project level, and not to compare products.
