Update of category 3 data for the civil engineering sector

Specifically for the Dutch market
On February 25, approximately 650 category 3 environmental declarations for civil engineering were updated. This makes it possible to make calculations for set A2, and the data is based on the latest process database, the current version of ecoinvent and current calculation rules. This quality improvement may lead to changes in the ECI (environmental cost indicator) for certain environmental statements. The other category 3 GWW environmental statements will be updated before the end of March.
Why this update?
The update is necessary to keep the environmental statements up to date. The most important changes are:
- The implementation of the current version of ecoinvent, with updated background data. The versions of ecoinvent used are 3.6 for the impact categories from set A1 and 3.9.1 for those from set A2.
- Tighter calculation rules, which have been implemented in the most recent version of the Assessment Method.
- Corrections in the composition of products, which means the data better reflects the actual environmental impact, and the background reports.
What does this mean for you?
These changes may affect the MKI of various environmental statements. This may also shift the environmental performance calculations at the project level. We recommend that you check your calculations in the preparatory phase of projects as soon as the updated data is available. Also be aware of this when choosing a suitable reference date for your project.
