NMD Foundation commissions TNO to research calculation rules for module D
Stichting NMD asked TNO to conduct a comparative study of how the environmental impact of Module D (reuse, recovery and recycling) of the determination method is calculated with certain product groups.

This was prompted by signals from practitioners that the calculation rules leave room for multiple explanations and that the results of the calculations would therefore not be equivalent. For example, when formulating the NL-PCR Asphalt, it was found that asphalt can obtain a bonus as a secondary material in module D, offsetting a large part of the production phase impact (module A). A similar outcome would also be possible with profile steel. There are also questions from the market as to whether the processing of bio-based materials should be different in module D.
The objective of this study is to create a level playing field for all product groups. That’s why Stichting NMD has asked TNO research organisation to conduct the study for the product groups asphalt, concrete, wood and steel. Within the European frameworks, module D environmental performance calculations are implemented for each product group.
The study should show whether further calculation rules are desirable to ensure unambiguous declarations. The more detailed calculation rules can focus on aspects that lie in the future, such as anticipated reuse (end-of-life processing scenarios). The recommendations that arise from the research do not need to be restricted to module D. Based on the study outcomes, Stichting NMD will engage BMNL with respect to further policy intentions.
