Biogenic carbon storage roadmap
Stichting NMD is preparing for the expansion of the environmental impact categories to set A2, in which “Climate change - biogenic” will be added as an indicator, among others. However, there seems to be a lack of clarity about balancing biogenic carbon according to the EN15804+A2 standard.
Background
LCAs for inclusion in the NMD are compiled with background data from Ecoinvent. It was found that Ecoinvent's system boundaries differ from EN15804+A2 in several ways (see memo). Consequently, a manual correction is required to prevent errors when balancing biogenic carbon storage. This therefore requires extra attention from LCA experts and testers to ensure that the data is compiled correctly.
The Environmental Cost Indicator (ECI) is currently calculated based on 11 categories (set A1), which does not include biogenic CO2. Current ECI calculations are therefore correct.
Guideline
To simplify this process, Stichting NMD instructed LBP|SIGHT to draw up a roadmap providing a practical explanation of how biogenic carbon should be corrected based on the EN15804+A2. The memo also responds to various substantive questions.
It is important to note that this memo is not a supplement to the EN15804+A2 and the Assessment Method. It merely explains how this should be applied correctly. The guideline is intended to support LCA practitioners and testers.
