Towards an Environmental Performance Calculation (MPG) using non-Dutch EPDs
DigiDeal 3 in short
Via an API or other easy, publicly accessible method, create the ability to upload (all European) EPDs into the Dutch Environmental Database and make this data - where possible - usable for application in a WLC-GWP calculation.
Background
The goal of digiDeal 3, Toward an WLC-GWP with non-Dutch EPDs, is to make international environmental product declarations (EPDs) usable within the Dutch environmental performance system (WLC-GWP). This way, more products can be included without relying solely on Dutch EPDs.
A key challenge is that there are significant differences in calculation methods, impact categories, system boundaries, and data specifications between countries. Additionally, it must be ensured that the use of foreign EPDs is consistent, reliable, and transparent. Guidelines are needed for conversion, validation, and sampling. Integration with DSGO services within the Dutch Environmental Database must also be properly organised.
The approach involves developing conversion rules and correction factors to make foreign EPDs suitable for the Dutch system. Additionally, a validation process and quality assurance system will be established, for example through peer reviews and audits. An acceptance framework and guidelines will be created to clarify which EPDs are admissible. Finally, services and APIs will be developed to automate the import and use of foreign EPDs.
The expected results include greater freedom of choice in products, as not only Dutch sources need to be used. This accelerates the transition to more sustainable products and ensures better alignment with European developments and regulations.
Result:
Expanding the availability and usability of environmentally relevant data, broadening and simplifying environmentally relevant product choices for designers and builders in the Dutch context, and aligning with European developments.
