Now available:
updated category 3 data for heat pumps, boilers and buffer tanks
Stichting NMD is working on improving the quality of category 3 data for buildings and utilities. As part of this work, the data for heat pumps has been updated and expanded. In addition, several new environmental declarations for boilers and buffer tanks have been prepared. The new environmental declarations are available as of today, 18 December 2025.
As part of this update, material composition and scaling formulas have been adjusted and the current EcoInvent versions have been applied. The heat pump data has also been enriched with new environmental declarations, including an expanded range of refrigerants, the addition of combined heat pumps, and environmental declarations for heat sources only (without a heat pump unit) for water-to-water and ground-to-water systems.
More detailed information can be found in the following reports:
Stichting NMD has also prepared a short note on the assumptions applied for heat pumps:
In addition to these new and updated environmental declarations, the environmental declarations for smaller heat pumps (up to 4 kWt) with a conversion factor will remain available.
LBP | Sight has carried out an impact analysis on behalf of Stichting NMD, using various reference buildings. This analysis concluded that the new data may result in higher impact scores in some cases — particularly for heat pumps with higher capacities.
This is due to updates in the databases and adjustments in material composition, installation losses and scaling formulas. These are now aligned with existing category 2 data. However, the new data does not pose any barriers to meeting the current environmental performance calculation requirement (MPG).
